Peel Police has identified the man who was shot dead in Brampton court after an “interaction” with police as 45 year old Charnjit “Sonny” Bassi. Bassi had opened firing in the courtroom in retaliation of which he was shot dead.

Constable Klarenbeek, 53, is out of intensive care but remains in hospital. The motive behind Bassi's shooting still remains mystery and the police is talking to his relatives to find the answer to the mystery.

 Bassi who started shooting at A. Grenville & William Davis Courthouse on Hurontario Street around 11 a.m. on Friday, was a father of seven year-old girl. He and his wife had divorced in 2012, but remained on amicable terms.

Bassi's ex wife Sonian Chowdhry, in a statement delivered by her lawyer on Wednesday, described Bassi as a gentle man who had never shown inclination to violence or fanaticism during their decade-long marriage. "At no time during their marriage did Mr. Bassi illustrate traits of mental health illness, suicidal ideation or religious fanaticism," said Rishi Singh Bhasin, reading from the statement.

Bassi didn't drink or abuse drugs in course of their marriage and was a good father for their daughter. He was "a gentle and supportive father," statement continued.

Bhasin further revealed that Chowdhry was aware of her ex-husband's potential involvement in illegal activities post their divorce. He said, "Since the dissolution of the marriage and … recent circumstances, she’s been made aware of certain alleged illegal activities Mr. Bassi may have been involved in."

According to the court records, Bhasin made around $150,000 a year in various businesses including a retail shop and selling used cars. Six months before his divorce, he had transferred his properties to Chowdhry and her family. At the time of shooting, Bassi lived in one of the homes and Chowdhry in the other, on the same street.
